On March 3, 2025, Ranya Rao was detained at Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport upon her arrival from Dubai on an Emirates flight. Acting on a tip-off regarding her suspected involvement in gold smuggling, DRI officials had stationed a team at the airport before her arrival. Upon landing, she was immediately taken into custody. 

Seizure of Gold and Subsequent Investigations

During the arrest, officials seized 14.2 kilograms of gold ingeniously concealed on her person, marking one of the largest gold seizures at Bengaluru International Airport in recent times. Following her detention, a search of her Lavelle Road residence in Bengaluru led to the discovery of gold jewelry worth ₹2.06 crore and Indian currency amounting to ₹2.67 crore, bringing the total seizure in the case to ₹17.29 crore.

Ranya Rao was produced before a special court for financial offenses on March 4, 2025, where she was remanded to judicial custody until March 18, 2025. During questioning, she claimed that her visit to Dubai was for business purposes. However, DRI officials allege that she was carrying a significant amount of gold intended to be smuggled into India. 

Reacting to the arrest, Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara stated that the investigation is underway and that the DRI is handling the case. He emphasized that until the DRI concludes its investigation, he would not be able to comment further. He also assured that the law applies equally to everyone, regardless of their connections or status.

Congress MLA and Legal Advisor to the Karnataka Chief Minister, AS Ponnanna, stated, "She has been accused of smuggling, and the law will take its course—whether she is the daughter of the DGP, the Chief Minister, or the Prime Minister.
